2.43 Excessive Whitespace (O)

FIGURE 2.78: whitespace highlighted on the Medical History Patient Settings page
2.43.1 Excessive Whitespace
The whitespace between the columns of the table on the Medical History Patient Settings page is quite significant. This can impose a cognitive load on users since they would have to pay closer attention to whether the row matches their selection.
People with low vision who rely on screen magnification software use white space to indicate that there is no more content available. Therefore, when there is a large amount of white space (especially horizontally), they may stop navigating across and miss the content.
2.43.2 Recommendation
Reduce the amount of whitespace between columns for easier association between the questions and the options.
