2.6 Table actions unclear (H)

FIGURE 2.12: Filters highlighted on the clinician dashboard
2.6.1 WCAG 1.3.1 (A), 2.4.4 (A), 2.4.6 (AA), 4.1.2 (A) - Desktop
The purpose of the carat next to each table header on the clinician dashboard is unclear—users might get confused because it could be seen as an option to filter the data based on the values.
Clicking on the carat sorts the data either in ascending/descending order of the values (such as for Required Actions or NHS number) or by the number of rows associated with each value (such as for Priority or Sex). However, users are not informed of this purpose. The buttons perform a different action depending on the header and this variability could be confusing for users.
This issue persists on the Manage Programmes, Enrolment, and Programmes page. The function does not work as a user might intend.
2.6.2 Recommendation
Provide users with additional context so they understand the purpose of the carat i.e. that the data is being sorted in ascending or descending order. This can be achieved using a visually-hidden span, e.g.:
<button> Priority <span class="visually-hidden"> sorted in ascending order </span> </button>
