2.15 Information conveyed through colour alone (H)

Weight information highlighted on the Monitoring patient information page

FIGURE 2.34: Weight information highlighted on the Monitoring patient information page

2.15.1 WCAG 1.4.1 (A) - Desktop

On the Monitoring Patient Information page, the change in a patient’s weight is highlighted in red along with visual proximity to an error icon. Colour is used to signify that the information is important.

However, this is unhelpful for users with vision impairments such as colour blindness as the color may not be seen. They are not given any other indication that the information is important. While using colour is an efficient method to draw attention to information, it should not be the only visual means of conveying information.

2.15.2 Recommendation

Use non-colour-based visual indicators (such as an icon or text) for highlighting the information. In this instance, provide users with text on screen which explains why the weight change is significiant e.g. ‘Warning- weight is below 62kg’.

Ensure this information is also presented to screen reader users (see Warning icon does not have alternative text (H) ).
